agf prints history

The agf prints collection represents the print works done by professional printmakers Robert Game and Susan Farquhar. Their careers span three different printmaking studios in Toronto from the late 1970″s to 2013. From monoprints to large editions they have documented some five hundred images in various printmaking techniques.

Robert Game graduated from the University of Alberta with a BFA in 1967. Here he was among the first few students enrolled in printmaking at the University. A few years later he arrived in Toronto where he then spent the next twelve years working at Open Studio as an artist, printmaker and printer for other artists. Open Studio offered the opportunity to learn the art of collaborative printmaking with the guidance of a master printer and develop technical skills. The following eight years he was director at Novak Graphics, printing etchings and managing the shop production of all etching, silkscreen and lithography projects of Canadian and international artists.

Susan Farquhar graduated in 1977 from York University with a BFA which focused on studio disciplines especially printmaking. 1979 to 1982 were spent at Open Studio training in lithography with a master printer while printing for artists, instructing classes and doing her own work. She was the printer in lithography at Novak Graphics for the same period as Robert.

In 1991 Robert and Susan established Atelier GF as a private, collaborative print studio, able to devote their resources to work with artists or publishers to create original editions. The Studio printed over 80 John Lennon editions and 3 sets of Yoko Ono calligraphy for Bag One Arts in New York as well as 16 editions for the Miles Davis Estate. Later through Bag One Robert and Susan collaborated with Anthony Hopkins to print 5 editions. Also they worked with Kenojuak Ashevak, Walter Bachinski, Anne Meredith Barry, David Bolduc, Stanley Boxer, Chris Broadhurst, Pat Fairhead, Brian Kelley, Barry Oretsky and Doug Stone. Print works of artists from Open Studio and Novak Graphics include Robert Bermalin, Ron Bolt, John Chamberlain, Joseph Drapell, Harold Feist, Irwin Group, Carl Heywood, Harold Klunder, Malcolm Morley, Louis De Niverville, Reinhard Reitzenstein, Dorothea Rockburne and Harold Town.
